How to Check a Gas Cooker Is Safe After Installation

What you can check after a gas cooker installation

A cooker lighting successfully is not proof that the installation is safe. Some important checks involve the gas supply and appliance operation, so they cannot be confirmed by looking at the cooker or trying it yourself. Your useful role is to check what is visible, understand how the appliance should operate and know when to stop using it.

When we install gas cookers for homes in Kingsteignton and across Torbay, we want the handover to leave you clear about what has been checked and how to use the appliance. As a Gas Safe registered business, we carry out gas work within the scope of our registration. The checks that establish safety are different from the simple observations you can make as the homeowner.

Look at the finished position, not the pipework

Check that the cooker appears stable, sits in its intended position and does not obstruct a doorway or other route through the kitchen. Make sure nothing is covering ventilation openings or restricting access to controls. Compare the arrangement with the appliance instructions, particularly any requirements relating to clearance from surrounding surfaces or ventilation.

These observations can identify an obvious concern, but they do not prove that the cooker has been connected correctly. Do not pull the appliance out to inspect the hose or pipe, tighten a connection, adjust a valve or try to test for leaks yourself. Moving the cooker can strain or disturb the connection, and a visual inspection cannot establish whether it is gas-tight.

Ask for the checks to be explained

Before the installation is treated as complete, ask the engineer to explain what was checked and to show you how to use the cooker. The appropriate checks before the cooker is put into use depend on the appliance and its installation. They may include checking the gas supply and connections, assessing operation and checking, where applicable, that the gas burns properly and fumes escape safely.

You do not need to interpret test readings or carry out a technical test yourself. Instead, make sure you understand which controls operate each burner, how to turn the appliance off and what to do if it does not behave as demonstrated. Keep the manufacturer’s instructions where you can find them. If you are unclear about an observation or a test result, ask for an explanation before relying on the cooker.

A useful handover is practical: you should be able to recognise normal operation for your model and know how to shut it down. Lighting a burner once, however, is only a basic function check. It cannot replace the checks a qualified engineer uses to assess the installation.

Know which warning signs mean stop

If you smell gas, do not try to locate the source, relight a burner or operate electrical switches. Avoid naked flames, leave the property and contact the gas emergency service from outside. Do not use the cooker again until the concern has been dealt with by a qualified person.

If a burner repeatedly fails to light, goes out unexpectedly or behaves differently from the demonstration, turn it off and seek advice rather than repeatedly trying to make it work. A single unusual event may have several possible explanations, but guessing at the cause or adjusting the appliance yourself is not a safe way to investigate it.

Also take seriously any concern about where the cooker sits, whether ventilation is obstructed or whether the appliance is difficult to control. Stop using it if you believe there is an immediate safety risk, and ask a Gas Safe registered engineer to assess the installation. Do not attempt to correct the position or connection by moving the cooker yourself.

What a homeowner check can and cannot tell you

A visual check can help you notice a problem with the cooker’s position, access or surrounding area. A demonstration can help you understand its controls. Neither one confirms that the gas connection or combustion performance is safe. That distinction matters: a cooker may appear tidy and light normally while still needing technical checks that are outside a homeowner’s role.
